Motorcycle Safety Awareness MonthThis is motorcycle awareness month. It’s spring and the sun is coming out again. Thank goodness! Now is the time to check over your motorcycle and give it the attention it deserves. It will love you back for the rest of the year and could even save your life.

Mechanics tell us motorcyclists could easily prevent many expensive repairs and dangerous conditions through relatively simple maintenance. Start with a full visual inspection from front to back. Make sure all bolts are secure. Check brake pads, belts, and hoses for wear. Change all fluids, not just oil, but also brake fluid and chain lube. Replace parts earlier than later. You will actually save money in the long term and prevent unnecessary mechanical failure. You do not want to learn of something riding down the highway at speed.

Tires are the only thing between you and the road. Make sure they are in good physical shape with no “flat” or worn spots. When storing, keep the tires slightly off the ground. And make certain the tires are properly inflated. Too much pressure can result in tire failure. Too little can cause handling and steering problems making the bike unstable.

And speaking of storage, it is critical to the life of your motorcycle to do it properly. Use fuel stabilizers to keep filters, pumps, carburetors, and fuel injectors from clogging after weeks or months of inactivity. Also consider using a “trickle charger” to keep your battery charged. It is also a good idea to regularly start and run the engine for a few minutes just to keep the fluids fresh. Finally, given the costs of motorcycles, try to find an indoor storage option or at least a custom fitted cover to protect from the elements.

Once you are ready to take your bike out and get back into riding for the summer, it would be wise to have a qualified mechanic check behind you just to make sure everything is the way it should be. This way, when you go to full throttle and feel the wind in your face, you can know that your motorcycle is truly ready to perform. Be Safe. Get Home.
