Tractor-Trailer Kills Woman in Charlotte

Traffic was tied up on both sides of Interstate 85 on Tuesday morning after a fiery, tractor-trailer crash that resulted in the death of one woman occurred after 11 a.m.

Bystanders on the scene report seeing a tractor-trailer with its front end demolished and the remnants of a small, mangled and burned red car.  Both the tractor-trailer and the car had been fully engulfed in flames at one point during the crash.

The truck driver was able to escape the flames just in time; however, the woman in the red car was not so fortunate and was killed in the wreck.

All northbound lanes of Interstate 85 near the Little Rock Road exit were shut down for over two hours.

Authorities commented that it was not yet clear whether charges will be filed.

An alarming 276,000 large trucks were involved in traffic crashes.  Truck drivers operate heavy trucks to transport goods and materials across the country and beyond.  With the U.S. being one of the worlds most powerful economies, there is seemingly no end in sight for the need for heavy trucks to carry out the demands of trade and distribution.  This reality, however, means that the every day driver shares the road with these mammoth vehicles.  Although truck drivers are required to have certain skills beyond that of the normal driver, risks associated with large trucks remain present and the threat of accidents looms nevertheless.

Councilman Named in Wrongful Death Lawsuit For Four-Car Crash–SC Accident Attorneys

A SC Councilman has been named in a wrongful death lawsuit surrounding a 201o ca accident that killed a 70-year-old woman.

The woman driver was struck by four vehicles on November 4, 2010.  The driver of the first car that collided with the woman’s vehicle has pleaded guilty for driving under the influence.  The Councilman’s vehicle was the second car to hit; however, he argues that he tried to swerve and is not responsible for the woman’s death.  This argument is further echoed by the Councilman’s attorney.

According to the Coroner, it was impossible to determine which of the four vehicles were responsible for the woman’s fatal injuries.

The Councilman is being sued for over $5 million.

Police’s Excessive Force Kills Mentally Ill Man–SC Wrongful Death Attorneys

The family of a 39-year-old man with schizophrenia who died after a struggle with Greenville police has sued the city, six police officers and Chief Terri Wilfong, alleging wrongful death “for use of excessive force by deploying multiple Tasers over an extended time and improper physical restraint technique,” according to federal court records.

The suit filed in U.S. District Court alleges wrongful death against officers who were called to the Augusta Street home of Andrew Torres in August 2012 to carry out a probate judge’s order sought by his family to take Torres to the hospital.  It also alleges that Torres’ constitutional rights were violated and that Wilfong “failed to promulgate adequate policies and failed to supervise her subordinates who use unconstitutional levels of force in taking mentally ill citizens into protective custody.”

Defendants deny the allegations.  According to police, Torres refused to cooperate and scuffled with officers at the time of the incident.

The Greenville County Coroner report indicates that Torres died of cardiac arrhythmia as a result of the use of Tasers, the physical strain of tussling with police, and having an enlarged heart.

The case has been ordered into mediation to be completed by February 4 of next year. The suit seeks both compensatory and punitive damages.
