An elderly couple died last week when their home caught aflame. The Coroner reports that the actual cause of death was due to smoke inhalation. The fire has since been ruled a tragic accident
The Greenville Fire Department was called to the scene of the accident around 12:15 a.m. They reported that the flames were upwards to 20 feet in the air when they arrived.
The couple was found upstairs, most likely attempting to escape the fire. It is believed by investigators that the fire began on the second floor, blocking the couple’s escape down the stairs.

Two Kershaw residents were killed over the weekend when they were involved in a crash that ended in fatality. According to the police report, a Kershaw mother and her child were travelling southbound on U.S. 1, while a pick up truck was travelling in the opposite direction.
The mother, who was 23-years-old, and her 2-year-old daughter were apparently driving a Camry sedan, when the truck driving in the opposite direction crossed over the center line and hit the mother and her child head on.
The truck driver was also a Kershaw resident, age 36, and was driving his Dodge pickup truck at the time of the accident.
Unfortunately, the young mother, as well as the passenger in the Dodge Truck both lost their lives due to the accident. However, the light at the end of the tunnel is that the 2-year-old child was strapped safely in her car seat, and survived the accident unscathed.
The accident is still currently under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
Studies conducted in 2010 revealed that 4,280 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 70,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the U.S. On average, a pedestrian was killed every 2 hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic collisions. Road safety is a responsibility for all road users, drivers and pedestrians alike. However, pedestrians can take extra precautions to ensure that the inherent vulnerability of walking around motor vehicles can be mitigated as much as possible. If you are a pedestrian traveler, be sure stay visible to drivers by wearing bight and/or reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight. Walk and stand clear of buses, hedges, parked vehicles, and other hazards before crossing.
