Truck drivers transport mass quantities of goods and materials across the country and beyond. With the U.S. being one of the worlds most powerful economies, there is seemingly no end in sight for the need for heavy trucks to carry out the demands of trade and distribution. With motor vehicle travel being the most common means of transportation in the U.S., it’s not surprising that motor vehicle crashes were the cause of 90 deaths per day in 2010. In fact, an alarming 32,885 people were killed in the estimated 5,419,000 police reported motor-vehicle crashes that occurred that year. There are precautions you can take, however, to help protect yourself and your family and to also help decrease the number of deaths and injuries on our nation’s highways. Firstly, never drink and drive. It’s always safer to call a cab or a friend. Also, obey posted speed limits. The faster you drive, the more you increase your risk of being involved in a crash. Try to avoid distractions like eating, texting or fiddling with electronic devices. Stay alert and never drive while you are feeling fatigued or drowsy. Lastly, always be sure that you and all of your passengers are wearing a seat belt or are properly restrained before you begin your drive.
Taking the right precautions can make the difference of life or death. However, even the most vigilant of drivers can be involved in a serious accident. A missing persons case came to a tragic end late Tuesday night when an elderly woman was struck and killed along Interstate 85.
The crash occurred around midnight along the southbound land of I-85 near Freedom Drive. Authorities say that the 76-year-old woman, who was in the early stages of dementia, was struck and killed just an hour after being reported missing.
The woman was last seen leaving her home, and told neighbors she was going to get her nails done.
She was later spotted by a driver walking into oncoming traffic before she was struck. According to State Highway Patrol, she was hit by two semi trucks traveling southbound. The drivers told authorities that the woman appeared out of nowhere, and that they attempted to swerve, but there was no time. Authorities say that there was nothing the drivers could have done to avoid the crash.
Troopers believe that the woman was disoriented and did not know where she was. According to the woman’s two sons, she had been to the neurologist just last Tuesday at the hospital.
No charges are being filed against the drivers who hit the woman.

Most pedestrians are hit when attempting to cross the road at places other than intersections. In fact, 63 percent of elderly pedestrian fatalities that occurred in 2010 were at non-intersection locations. With the transportation environment becoming increasingly more complex, and the dominance of vehicles with high speeds and heavy traffic volumes on the main roads, high demands are being placed on pedestrian safety, particularly with regard to the elderly. Yet, people of all populations can be impacted and all pedestrians should protect themselves by staying alert and informed when walking near roads and highways. A few simple tips for pedestrians include walking on the sidewalk. When there is no sidewalk and walking along the road is necessary, walk in the direction facing traffic. When crossing the street, look left, right, and then left again for traffic. Cross marked sidewalks and obey signals. Lastly, make sure drivers can see you by wearing brightly colored clothing.

Apparently, a trash can is to blame for a serious four-vehicle accident on I-26. The collision injured two people, but caused thousands to be late for work this past Monday.
According to the police report, the accident occurred when a car stopped on the bridge to avoid hitting a trashcan that was left in the roadway. From there, the chain-reaction crash continued with the second car rear-ending the first vehicle. The third vehicle then rear-ended the second, and the fourth vehicle hit the third, causing it to flip over.
The four car pile-up caused all but one of the four highway lanes to be closed down while emergency crews rapidly worked on cleaning up the mess.
