Charlotte drivers experienced big delays on Interstate 85 after a multi-car crash during rush hour near uptown Charlotte Thursday evening.

All lanes on I-85 near exit 45 in the University area were shut down after two red sedans and a silver sedan collided around 5:30 p.m.

At least two people had to be extricated from their cars after the crash.  They were both transported to area hospitals with life-threatening injuries, according to Medic.

Backups resulting from the crash stretched for about six miles all the way to Interstate 77.  All northbound lanes were reopened after crews cleared the scene around 8 p.m.
