A Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer is recovering after a head on collision that happened in southwest Charlotte that left him seriously injured Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred at approximately 2:15 p.m. on the 10000 block of Steele Creek Road.

The officer was driving a marked police car, headed south on Steele Creek Road from Brown-Grier Road toward Westinghouse Boule Road when a Jeep Liberty SUV heading north on Steele Creek Road crossed the double-yellow line and crashed into the officer’s car head on.

The patrol car came to a stop on the shoulder of the road.

Firefighters responding to the crash had to cut off the top of the car to extract the policeman.  It took firefighters 36 minutes to free the man from the car.

The officer was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center and remains in serious condition.

The driver of the Jeep SUV was also seriously injured and taken to the hospital by ambulance.

With motor vehicle travel being the number one means of transportation in the U.S., it’s not surprising that motor vehicle crashes were the cause of 90 deaths per day in 2010.  Every trip to the store or drive across town presents its own set of risks, and road conditions and weather can vary those risks significantly.
