A 2-year-old boy is dead and three others injured after an illegal street race ended in a violent crash on Interstate 77 early Saturday morning.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 1 a.m. near West Boulevard after two racing vehicles ran into one another and then slammed into a guardrail.
Three people were transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. A two-year-old boy died as a result of the crash.
The driver of one of the racing cars,20, was ejected in the crash.
The 22-year-old driver of the second car and his passenger, 22-year-old mother of the deceased toddler were both injured in the collision.
Troopers say the drivers of both vehicles had alcohol in their system. The three surviving victims are recovering in the hospital.
The incident shut down I-77 northbound near mile marker 8 for over two-and-a-half hours Saturday morning.
According to officials, charges will be filed.
