Members of the North Carolina Highway Patrol are continuing an investigation into a fatal accident that killed a toddler Saturday morning.
The incident occurred around 10:40 a.m. Saturday morning on Steele Road, outside of Waxhaw.
According to authorities, the 29-year-old father was backing out of his driveway when he somehow ran over his young daughter.
Officials say the baby girl was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center Main, but was later pronounced dead. A spokesperson for the investigation reported that neither speed nor alcohol were factors in the incident.
The toddler was a mere 16 months old. The father is not facing charges at this time.
Studies reveal that every week in the United States approximately fifty children will be backed over by vehicles with at least two being injured fatally. Tragically, over 70 percent of these incidents involves a driver that is a parent or close relative. There is always a responsibility for drivers to be aware of what is behind their vehicle before backing up; However, when small children are present, that duty becomes more important than ever.
