Since 2001, an alarming 1,368 people have died in school transportation related crashes–this is an average of 137 fatalities annually. 7 percent of these fatalities accounted for occupants of school transportation vehicles, and 21 percent accounted for non-occupant fatalities. A Charlotte doctor is facing possible charges for his involvement in a crash that killed a 47-year-old man and shut down a major south Charlotte artery Thursday afternoon.
Investigators on the scene say that the 35-year-old doctor, a third-year medical resident at Carolinas Healthcare System, was driving along the 4900 block of Rea Road when he drove in front of a dump truck, hitting the front left of his vehicle. This caused the doctor to cross the center lane and crash head-on into a 2002 Jaguar X-type, killing the driver on impact.
Police do not know what caused the doctor to cross the center lane; however, there is speculation that the doctor may have fallen asleep behind the wheel after having worked at least a 12-hour shift at the hospital.
So far the doctor has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
Charlotte DOT already has plans to upgrade the road by adding a median and bike lanes. The road will also be leveled, eliminating dips that make it a challenge for cars to see other cars.
