According to a recent report ranking the 195 largest U.S. cities, the driving skills of Charlotteans fall far below drivers in other cities in North Carolina as well as the rest of the nation.
The report ranks cities based on the frequency of car crashes. It found that Charlotte drivers, on average, will experience a collision every 8.9 years, compared to the national average of 10 years.
Charlotte was ranked number 120 on the list. As for other cities in North Carolina, Cary was ranked 17th, Fayetteville was 38th, Winston-Salem was 40th, Raleigh 71st, Durham was 74th, and Greensboro was ranked 76th.
With motor vehicle travel being the most common means of transportation in the U.S., it’s not surprising that motor vehicle crashes were the cause of 90 deaths per day in 2010. In fact, an alarming 32,885 people were killed in the estimated 5,419,000 police reported motor-vehicle crashes that occurred that year.
