A tragic accident occurred Wednesday night when a child was struck in the head by a passing van while trick-or-treating.

The accident happened around 8:30 p.m. after the boy was struck by the passenger side mirror of a van near the intersection of Smokey Creek and Calico Roads in Lenoir.  A chunk of the mirror was recovered from the scene.
