Students and co-workers mourned the loss of a crossing guard at a local school after the man was killed while directing traffic outside Mt. Mourne School in Iredell County.
The 59-year-old retiree was hit after a 23-year-old woman, who claims she did not see the man, was waved through traffic and struck the man shortly after 3 p.m.
The man was wearing an orange vest and waving an orange baton at the time he was struck. There were also orange cones on the road at the time of the crash. Some witnesses claim that “the only way not to see him is to not be looking.”
On the other hand, neighbors near the school report that the area is in need of some changes and that the traffic patterns have rapidly changed over the last 10 years.
The North Carolina Department of Transportation says engineers plan to look at the school zone area to see if any changes to the area would be appropriate.
According to investigators, the woman was not speeding nor was she impaired. The woman is not yet facing charges, however, the district attorneys office has received the case for review.

A 2-year-old boy is dead and three others injured after an illegal street race ended in a violent crash on Interstate 77 early Saturday morning.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 1 a.m. near West Boulevard after two racing vehicles ran into one another and then slammed into a guardrail.
Three people were transported to Carolinas Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. A two-year-old boy died as a result of the crash.
The driver of one of the racing cars,20, was ejected in the crash.
The 22-year-old driver of the second car and his passenger, 22-year-old mother of the deceased toddler were both injured in the collision.
Troopers say the drivers of both vehicles had alcohol in their system. The three surviving victims are recovering in the hospital.
The incident shut down I-77 northbound near mile marker 8 for over two-and-a-half hours Saturday morning.
According to officials, charges will be filed.

A teenager is fighting for his life after being thrown from a truck in a crash early Saturday morning.
The accident happened around 1 a.m. Saturday morning at Highway 51 and Blair Road, off the exit ramp on Interstate 485.
The teenager was driving his pick-up truck when he collided with a Ford Mustang, hit a guardrail, and was thrown from the truck.
The teen was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center Main with life-threatening injuries.
Luckily, the driver of the Mustang was not injured in the crash.
An investigation continues into whether alcohol and speed were factors in the crash.

A crash on Interstate 77 brought traffic to a halt in south Charlotte Monday morning.
The wreck happened around 6:15 a.m. near Clanton Road on the right side of the southbound lanes of I-77. Two lanes were shut down for an hour while crews worked to clear the scene.
Two ambulances arrived on the scene and transported three people to the hospital. The injuries were said to be non-life threatening.
Lanes were reopened around 7 a.m. Traffic was backed up for approximately three hours with heavy delays at the Morehead Street intersection in uptown.

Three people were hospitalized after a multi-car wreck in north Charlotte Saturday evening.
The crash was reported just after 7 p.m. in the 400 block of W. Sugar Creek Road, about a half mile from the intersection of North Tryon and Sugar Creek.
According to police, the driver was impaired and crossed the median, striking four vehicles in the process.
Three people were transported to area hospitals with potentially life-threatening injuries. One of the three people taken to the hospital was the drunk driver who caused the crash. He is reportedly in intensive care in Carolinas Medical Center Main.
Officials say the driver will be facing a slew of charges once he has been released from the hospital. Witnesses say the driver was so intoxicated he could barely stand.

An east Charlotte father is dead after his car was struck head-on by a drunk driver Saturday.
The now deceased man was pulling out of his neighborhood with his wife and young daughter heading for a Miami vacation, when the 20-year-old drunk driver crashed into the family’s car on Reedy Creek Road just before 1 a.m.
