Across the nation, the rate of fatal motorcycle accidents has increased over the past decade at a rate of about 150% from those recorded in 2000. In 2010, about 5200 riders were killed with about 100,000 being injured.
In the state of South Carolina, deaths from motorcycle accidents increased from less than 100 in 2003 to over 150 in 2010. Further, in North Carolina, motorcycle deaths have gone from about 100 in 2003 to over 200 in 2010.
The fact is that motorcycle deaths are more common than automobile deaths due to the fact that they are simply not protected while driving on the roadways. When a car strikes another car, the impact effects the body of the car, and not the driver. However, when something strikes a motorcycle, more often than not, the motorcyclist is hit; not just the motorcycle. Research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration illustrates that about 70 percent of motorcycle accidents are the result of another vehicle not being able to see the motorcycle. And also speeding, aggressive driving, and inattention at the wheel are other leading factors.

A resident from Rock Hill was involved in a serious motorcycle accident this past Friday night that resulted in a fatality for the man.
According to the police reports, the man was driving his motorcycle southbound down Interstate 77 near Dave Lyle Boulevard in Rock Hill around 10:00 p.m. The man was reported to of not of been wearing a helment during the crash. The details are still a bit hazy as the investigation carries on; but the police do know that the man fell from his motorcycle, injuring himself.
Luckily, no other victims were harmed by this crash, and the resident was travelling alone at the time.
Rock Hill’s Captain of the Highway Patrol stated that the man had to be airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. The Coroner further added that the man was not pronounced dead upon arrival, but rather he lingered on until Tuesday evening, when he passed away.
The exact cause of the accident has still not been released. It is not apparent whether or not the man was intoxicated; whether or not he fell from his motorcycle in an attempt to avoid hitting something else; or whether or not there were any other parties involved who have not yet come forward.
In any event, travelling on a motorcycle can be a very dangerous means of transportation. The fact of the matter is the more metal you have around you to protect you in the event of an accident, the better it is. This is not to say that motorcycles should not be driven; however extra safety precautions should be exercised in doing so. In the case at hand, had the resident been wearing his helmet at the time, the motorcycle crash may not have ended in a fatality. Always follow the laws when driving motorcycle, and even more importantly, always wear your helmet and NEVER drink and drive.
However, no matter how safe you are, sometimes injury can not be prevented. A Lancaster resident has subsequently passed away after a violent motorcycle accident she was involved in earlier in the month.
Accordingly, the 42-year-old Lancaster woman was riding her motorcycle around 4:45 p.m. when she was travelling westbound on S,C, 5.
She was driving her a 1997 Kawasaki motorcycle, when a vehicle travelling eastbound began to approach her. When the car and the motorcycle were parallel to one another, the car attempted to make a left turn onto Steel Hill Road, colliding with the victim’s motorcycle.
The Lancaster woman was not wearing her helmet at the time of the accident. Upon the paramedics arrival, the victim was airlifted to the closest hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The victim survived for a little over a week, until she was subsequently pronounced dead while still in the hospital.
There are no clues or suspicions as to if either of the drivers were intoxicated while operating their vehicles.
Motorcycle accidents are exponentially more dangerous then that of a regular car. The rationale is that when you are driving a car, you have more metal and protection between you and the collision. However, unlike a typical car, the only thing protecting a person driving a motorcycle from impact due to a collision is their own bodies.
That being said, it is pertinent that one driving a motorcycle exercises extra precautions when operating their vehicle. Wearing a helmet is key. If there is no protection between you and the possible impact, the best thing to do is use your brain and protect it. Thousands of people die every year from serious head or brain injuries due to motorcycle accidents whereas the result may have been different if their head had been protected.
