SC Father and Son Killed By Home Fire

Two residents of Darlington, South Carolina, were killed when their adjacent homes were destroyed by fire last Sunday.

The father, a 67-year-old veteran journalist lived in the main house whereas the son lived behind him in the “guest house.”

Firefighters received a frantic phone call from the son Sunday morning, stating that the main house had caught aflame, and reported to the communications officer that he was entering the home to search for his father.

Sadly, by the time the firefighters arrived on site, both men were found dead. One body was found near the front of the house, and the second body was found toward the back of the house.

The Darlington Fire Department battled flames for over 2 hours before they were able to enter the house and discover the bodies, which were pronounced dead on scene. The fire completely destroyed the 110-year-old two-story home.

Local School Crossing Guard Struck and Killed

Students and co-workers mourned the loss of a crossing guard at a local school after the man was killed while directing traffic outside Mt. Mourne School in Iredell County.

The 59-year-old retiree was hit after a 23-year-old woman, who claims she did not see the man, was waved through traffic and struck the man shortly after 3 p.m.

The man was wearing an orange vest and waving an orange baton at the time he was struck.  There were also orange cones on the road at the time of the crash.  Some witnesses claim that “the only way not to see him is to not be looking.”

On the other hand, neighbors near the school report that the area is in need of some changes and that the traffic patterns have rapidly changed over the last 10 years.

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says engineers plan to look at the school zone area to see if any changes to the area would be appropriate.

According to investigators, the woman was not speeding nor was she impaired.  The woman is not yet facing charges, however, the district attorneys office has received the case for review.

School crossing guards play a crucial role in the safety of our children in route to school, yet these brave workers are at risk for traumatic injuries every day while on the job.  In fact, from 1993-2008, 120 crossing guards were killed on the job in the U.S.  Drivers should always be aware of what is happening around them on the road.  If you or someone you know is involved in a serious accident, it is imperative that you find an attorney that can pave your path to recovery.  Call Accident Attorneys of Reeves, Aiken, and Hightower at 704-499-9000 or 877-374-5999 toll-free.

Impaired Driver Causes Multi-Car Crash in Charlotte

Three people were hospitalized after a multi-car wreck in north Charlotte Saturday evening.

The crash was reported just after 7 p.m. in the 400 block of W. Sugar Creek Road, about a half mile from the intersection of North Tryon and Sugar Creek.

According to police, the driver was impaired and crossed the median, striking four vehicles in the process.

Three people were transported to area hospitals with potentially life-threatening injuries.  One of the three people taken to the hospital was the drunk driver who caused the crash.  He is reportedly in intensive care in Carolinas Medical Center Main.

Officials say the driver will be facing a slew of charges once he has been released from the hospital.  Witnesses say the driver was so intoxicated he could barely stand.

Police across the nation are cracking down on drunk driving.  And there’s good reason for this trend since the NHTSA found that 10,228 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2010.  There is always a better option than driving while impaired.  Call the DUI Attorneys of Reeves, Aiken, and Hightower if you or a loved one is involved in a serious accident.  You can speak directly with one of our lawyers at 704-499-9000 or 877-374-5999 toll-free.
