After years of bumper-to-bumper commutes and the worst bottlenecks in the state, progress is being made in plans to expand a busy stretch of Interstate 485 in south Charlotte.
Contractors have been hired to expand a stretch of I-485 that extends nine miles, adding new lanes from Interstate 77 to Rea Road.
According to reports, the design team is now determining how to put it all in place and tweek the plans to add additional lanes and even add a massive flyover at the Johnston Road interchange.
Drivers should expect some lane closings to accommodate the construction next summer, but so far there are no expectations of closing the interstate completely.

A crash involving a FBI agent completely shut down the outer loop of Interstate 485 near Steele Creek Road Thursday afternoon.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, an on-duty FBI agent driving a black SUV was parked on the left shoulder off the highway when a pickup truck veered off the road and crashed into the SUV.
Three people suffered potentially life-threatening injuries and the driver of the pickup truck was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center—Main.
Witnesses say the woman driver of the truck that struck the SUV was speeding.
Highway Patrol directed traffic off of I-485 at the exit ahead of Steele Creek Road while crews worked to clear the scene.

A 48-year-old Rock Hill resident died yesterday when his car collided into a tree just south of Rock Hill.
The accident took place on SC 901, a few miles from Rock Hill. According to the South Carolina Police Department’s investigation reveals the victim was driving hid 1984 Chevy Pick up truck when the truck drove off the right hand side of the road and aggressively struck a tree.
The victim lost his life on scene, due to blunt force, i.e the impact tree hitting the tree.
The victim was reported to have been wearing his seatbelt.

At least 10 people have been hospitalized after a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 485 on Saturday afternoon.
The crash happened near Moores Chapel Road and I-485 when a 43-year-old Charlotte man looked away from traffic in front of him, and then plowed into the back of several vehicles causing a chain reaction.
Of the 10 people who were transported to area hospitals, 5 suffered life-threatening injuries.
I-485 was closed until around 6 p.m. while first responders worked to clear the scene.

A fatal crash involving two trucks on Interstate 85 south has left one person dead and traffic at a stand still Monday.
According to North Carolina Highway Patrol, the crash happened a little after 5 p.m. on I-85 near the Sam Wilson Road exit, at the truck weigh station.
59-year-old Charlotte man was killed after his Budget truck crashed into the rear of a broken down tractor-trailer.
The crash shut down all southbound lanes at Sam Wilson Road at exit 29, backing up traffic for over two hours after the wreck.

At least 12 people are injured after a crash involving a CATS bus and a truck on North Tryon Street and East 16th Street Thursday morning.
According to Charlotte Mecklenburg Police, the bus was traveling south on N. Tryon when a truck lost control and crashed into the bus.
Emergency crews transported seven victims to Carolinas Medical Center Main. Five people were transported to Presbyterian Hospital.
Medics reported that at least one person was suffering life-threatening injuries.
Commuters faced delays in both directions while emergency crews and police worked on the scene.
