T-Bone Crash Hospitalizes Charlotte Drivers

A major intersection was shut down after a violent crash sent several drivers to the emergency room Tuesday evening.

According to police, at approximately 11 p.m. the driver of one car involved in the crash blew through a red light at the intersection of Pineville-Matthews Road and Johnston Road.

Impact occurred in the middle of the crossroads when a white truck crashed into a silver Infinity, causing the two vehicles to careen off the road some twenty feet.

The force of the moving vehicles caused a utility pole to snap in half.

Firefighters on the scene extracted the man from the Infinity among the live wires from the down power lines, but the accident has left some with serious personal injury.

Charlotte Doctor Involved in Head On Crash Kills Man

A Charlotte doctor is facing possible charges for his involvement in a crash that killed a 47-year-old man and shut down a major south Charlotte artery Thursday afternoon.

Investigators on the scene say that the 35-year-old doctor, a third-year medical resident at Carolinas Healthcare System, was driving along the 4900 block of Rea Road when he drove in front of a dump truck, hitting the front left of his vehicle.  This caused the doctor to cross the center lane and crash head-on into a 2002 Jaguar X-type, killing the driver on impact.

Police do not know what caused the doctor to cross the center lane; however, there is speculation that the doctor may have fallen asleep behind the wheel after having worked at least a 12-hour shift at the hospital.

So far the doctor has been charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

Charlotte DOT already has plans to upgrade the road by adding a median and bike lanes.  The road will also be leveled, eliminating dips that make it a challenge for cars to see other cars.

With motor vehicle travel being the number one means of transportation in the U.S., it’s not surprising that motor vehicle crashes were the cause of 90 deaths per day in 2010.  Every trip to the store or drive across town presents its own set of risks, and low energy levels can increase those risks significantly.  Therefore, it is necessary to pay special attention if you are driving while fatigued and take appropriate safety precautions.
