Two fortunate people are suffering only minor injuries after being involved in a dangerous accident when their SUV flew off a bridge early Thursday morning.
A passerby first alerted emergency personnel just after midnight when a speeding SUV was spotted running off a bridge and overturning down a hill.
North Carolina Highway Patrol arrived on the scene at the 1900 block of Alexis-Lucinda Road near the town of Stanley.
Medics transported the young driver to the hospital. The passenger was treated and was able to be released at the scene.
According to troopers, the SUV was going way too fast and alcohol was a factor.
It is still unclear whether the underage driver will be facing any charges.
Studies reveal that over 10 million youths, ages 12 to 20, in the United States report they have consumed alcohol in the past 30 days. Charlotte fire fighters came to the rescue in east Charlotte Tuesday morning when they rescued a woman trapped inside a vehicle after a crash.
According to Charlotte Mecklenburg Police, a woman was pulling out of the Walmart parking lot and pulled out in front of a second vehicle that was traveling on outbound Independence Boulevard.
Officers say the second driver attempted to swerve to avoid the woman’s car, but the cars crashed, causing the first vehicle to hit the median and flip over.
Outbound Independence at Pierson Drive was shut down completely for a brief period while 17 firefighters worked to extricate the woman from the first vehicle.
Concerns about the safety of this intersection have been voiced since the time the store was first built. These concerns were only echoed after Tuesday’s dangerous collision.
Locals are concerned that drivers are pulling out of this parking lot into interstate-speed traffic. This is especially troubling for those drivers who are attempting to cross over all four lanes to make it to the Albemarle Road exit on the left side of outbound Independence.
A North Carolina DOT spokesperson says they are aware of the problem and are looking into whether adjustments are needed. As of now, there are no plans underway to re-arrange the traffic patterns in this area.
It’s a simple fact, the faster you drive, the more likely you are to crash and the greater your risk of serious injury or death. Notwithstanging the cause of a crash, the driver’s decision to travel at a certain speed directly affects the force of impact. There are plenty of reasons not to speed that greatly outweigh being prompt to your destination. If you or a family member is involved in a serious accident, whether or not speed was a factor, you need an attorney on your side.
