Two fortunate people are suffering only minor injuries after being involved in a dangerous accident when their SUV flew off a bridge early Thursday morning.
A passerby first alerted emergency personnel just after midnight when a speeding SUV was spotted running off a bridge and overturning down a hill.
North Carolina Highway Patrol arrived on the scene at the 1900 block of Alexis-Lucinda Road near the town of Stanley.
Medics transported the young driver to the hospital. The passenger was treated and was able to be released at the scene.
According to troopers, the SUV was going way too fast and alcohol was a factor.
It is still unclear whether the underage driver will be facing any charges.
Studies reveal that over 10 million youths, ages 12 to 20, in the United States report they have consumed alcohol in the past 30 days. During that same period, binge drinking among that same age group was 17.4%. Drinking and driving among youths is a startling and scary reality. Parents and family members need to look out for warning signs that their child may be drinking and driving for the sake of their child and other road users.
