Highway Patrol Asking Drivers For a Safe New Year’s

With the New Year’s Holiday approaching, North Carolina Highway Patrol is urging motorists to bring in the new year safely by refraining from driving while impaired, remembering to wear seat belts and staying focused while on the road.

Last year, North Carolina experienced ten motor-vehicle fatalities between Christmas and New Year’s.

Already, two fatalities have been reported this year as of 11:59 p.m. Christmas day.

North Carolina troopers have investigated a shocking 5,545 collisions attributed to alcohol impairment this year.  This number is an unfortunate increase from last year’s total.  That’s why it’s more important than ever to ask motorists to practice safe driving techniques while celebrating the New Year. Whether it’s New Year’s eve or any other day of the year, if you are involved in a serious accident, you need competent and experienced representation as you map your most successful path to recovery.  Call the Accident Attorneys of Reeves, Aiken, and Hightower at 704-499-9000 or 877-374-5999 toll-free.

What Does It Mean to File a Personal Injury Suit in SC?

I’m sure you have heard many people say that they have either been involved, or know someone who has filed a personal injury suit.SC Personal Injury Attorney

What is important to note, however, is to know the ends and outs of what a filing a “personal injury” suit really means?

First and foremost, you need to make sure that the statute of limitations has not run on your claim yet. In other words, if it has been more than three years since your injury, then you are barred from bringing a personal injury claim in South Carolina.

Moreover, you need to understand that the laws have changed drastically and are ever-changing. What this means is that you need to contact a personal injury attorney who knows the laws, and knows how to make the laws work for you.

We have all heard our second cousin, or our Aunt say something along the lines as “When I got injured in a car accident 22 years ago, I got almost $200,000 dollars!” This is certainly not only the case.

South Carolina recognizes what is called “modified comparative negligence,” which means that if you are more at fault then the defendant, you will not be permitted to recover anything. However, let’s assume that you were 30% at fault, and the defendant was 70% at fault. This means you are eligible to recover for your losses and your personal injuries due to the accident, whether it is via car, motorcycle, or tractor-trailer.

If you have been injured in a car accident, or any accident that was serious for that matter, and the accident was less than three years ago, contact the law offices of Reeves, Aiken, and Hightower, LLP toll-free at 877-374-5999 for a free consultation with our seasoned and experienced attorneys.

Parents Sue Police After Son Killed by Taser

The parents of a deceased Charlotte man are suing the police department after their son died from being shocked by a Taser last year.

In the suit, Charlotte police are accused of using excessive, deadly force when shocking the 21-year-old man twice in July 2011.

Parents of the boy say he was shocked during an altercation between him and his girlfriend at the light rail station.

The Police attorney says the city is preparing their defense in the suit, which was filed Tuesday in federal court.  According to the Police attorney, the young man’s death is certainly tragic, but he nonetheless believes that the officers involved acted properly.

Recent studies have shown that between 2001 and 2008 351 people in the United States died after being shocked police Tasers.  Neighborhoods and communities across the nation trust police officers to serve and protect our loved ones.  However, the nature of police work demands officers to walk a fine line in using the appropriate amount of force to restrain individuals.  If you or someone you love has been injured in a serious accident involving a police officer or Taser gun, call Reeves, Aiken, and Hightower at 704-499-9000 or 877-374-5999 toll-free.
