A woman is facing multiple charges after an SUV crash during a police chase that resulted in the death of her daughter.
When deputies tried to pull over the mother for a simple traffic violation on Interstate 85, she led them on a chase that reached speeds of over 100 mph. During the chase, the mother’s 7-year-old daughter threw marijuana from the SUV that was later recovered.
Immediately after the crash, the mother’s family and friends told deputies that the child was the mother’s niece and gave an incorrect name for the girl. On Tuesday, however, the Coroner reported that because of the hospitals privacy policies and a “lack of cooperation from the child’s mother,” the wrong name and relationship had been reported.
The Coroner nevertheless has since determined the correct relationship of between the mother and the child. The mother remains hospitalized for non-life threatening injuries.
The mother is now facing six charges in connection with the pursuit and crash, according to Sheriff Chuck Wright. The list includes: failure to stop for blue light, resulting in death; driving under suspension, third and subsequent; reckless driving; possession with intent to distribute marijuana; unlawful neglect of a child and an habitual traffic offender charge.
Once the mother has been released from the hospital, she will be transported to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Detention Center where the arrest warrants will be formally served.

A Greenville County woman has pled guilty in a wreck that killed two people and injured two others in a wreck last year.
The 46-year-old Defendant was responsible for the wreck that caused a Department of Social Services worker and 10-year-old a child who was in DSS custody to lose their lives. According to Prosecutor, the defendant had been inhaling keyboard cleaner, which impaired her driving and in turn, caused the car accident. The Defendant missed a court appearance earlier this summer and was subsequently arrested in Ohio on fugitive warrant, only to later return to South Carolina.
The Defendant pleaded guilty in Pickens for “two counts of felony drunk driving resulting in death and two counts of felony drunk driving involving serious injury.”

In a recent 2-1 decision, the South Carolina Court of Appeals affirmed the workers’ compensataion commission’s position against former stripper, LeAndra Lewis’ claim for benefits because she was not considered an employee of Boom Boom Studio 54 in Columbia.
Lewis, who was 19-years-old when she was performing at the Columbia Club, was shot in the abdomen during a fight that occurred between two customers. The 2008 shooting left Lewis with serious injuries to her liver, intestines, pancreas, kidney and uterus.
During her stripping days, Lewis would normally work five nights a week, traveling between the Carolinas. However, the scarring resulting from her injuries has cut her stripping career short.
Various arguments that Lewis was not an employee support the Court’s decision, including that management never specified how she was supposed to dance for patrons and that the club had not supplied her with any equipment. In fact, “from the standpoint of both the Boom Boom Room and its customers, Lewis brought her own ‘equipment’ for her work,” wrote the court. The Court further noted that the club did not pay Lewis to perform and that it was actually Lewis who paid for the opportunity to dance and collect tips from customers.
Judge Paul Short, dissenting, argued that Lewis was an employee of the club because management had the power to fine or fire strippers who missed their turn in rotation, who left early, charged their own V.I.P. dance price, or broke any other rules.

The family of a 39-year-old man with schizophrenia who died after a struggle with Greenville police has sued the city, six police officers and Chief Terri Wilfong, alleging wrongful death “for use of excessive force by deploying multiple Tasers over an extended time and improper physical restraint technique,” according to federal court records.
The suit filed in U.S. District Court alleges wrongful death against officers who were called to the Augusta Street home of Andrew Torres in August 2012 to carry out a probate judge’s order sought by his family to take Torres to the hospital. It also alleges that Torres’ constitutional rights were violated and that Wilfong “failed to promulgate adequate policies and failed to supervise her subordinates who use unconstitutional levels of force in taking mentally ill citizens into protective custody.”
Defendants deny the allegations. According to police, Torres refused to cooperate and scuffled with officers at the time of the incident.
The Greenville County Coroner report indicates that Torres died of cardiac arrhythmia as a result of the use of Tasers, the physical strain of tussling with police, and having an enlarged heart.
The case has been ordered into mediation to be completed by February 4 of next year. The suit seeks both compensatory and punitive damages.

On September 4th around 5:30 p.m., Jeffrey Scott Bailey, a 20-year-old Lawndale resident, was transported by ambulance to Carolinas Medical Center following a two-car crash on N.C. 18.
According to Trooper Brian Theis of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a Ford F-150 rear-ended the Pontiac Firebird in which Bailey was riding. The possible danger arose where Bailey was sitting in the back seat of the small Firebird when it was struck from behind by the F-150.
Theis reported that he was not aware of any life threatening injuries resulting from the crash. Several others involved in the crash were transported to Cleveland Regional Medical Center for treatment.Members of the Fallston Fire Department said that Bailey was pinned inside the car after the crash. Three Firetrucks responded to the crash along with Cleveland County EMS and the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office.
