A tractor-trailer driver lost control of his vehicle last Wednesday afternoon on Highway 5 in Rock Hill, where the end result took out a utility pole and lots of traffic lights.
The devastation to the traffic lights caused quite a halt in traffic, but the Rock Hill Fire Department and the City’s utility Department rushed to the scene to work on the
restoration of power to the traffic lights.
According to the official reports, the source of the accident was by the truck driver making an ” evasive” maneuver to avoid hitting a vehicle that ” cut him off” the driver said. He said that the sedan in front of him came out of no where, and then sped in front of his vehicle, forcing him to turn the vehicle in the manner in which he did.
The accident knocked out lights on both S.C. 5 and Herlong Avenue.
Thus, the driver will not be found to be at fault in this incident, and no one was harmed by the accident.

A man from Winnsboro was injured in a vehicle collision Monday afternoon when his Dodge Ram rear-ended a tractor-trailer.
The accident report states that the crash occurred a little before 1:30 p.m. on Interstate-77, near mile marker 82 in Rock Hill.
The 42-year-old was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the incident, yet still suffered serious injuries. Moreover, the passengers in his vehicle suffered minor injuries, and all reported to of been wearing their seatbelts as well.
Apparently, he rear-ended the tractor-trailer that was stalled out on the highway due to mechanical issues, causing the accident under dangerous driving conditions. On that particular afternoon, there was a downpour of rain, which made the roads slick and it was difficult to see the next car in front of you.
The man had five passengers in his truck, one being an adult female, and the other four were her minor children. They were all transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte via ambulance. The driver however, had to be airlifted from the scene, and reports on his current condition are not yet available.
Traffic was subsequently stalled for almost two hours while clean-up crews worked around the clock to make way for the current drivers.
The man, once released from the hospital, will be charged with ” driving under dangerous conditions.”

A tractor-trailer accident in Rock Hill resulted in the death of two individuals a few days ago.
Channel 9 reported on this case, and stated that the tractor-trailer was in route from New Jersey when the driver slid off Interstate-77 and hit an embankment, just on the south side of Rock Hill, SC.
The male driver, and his female passenger, ages 48 and 42 respectively, were both killed upon impact. According to the reports, the tractor began to drift off the highway, and continued to do so until hitting the bank and then almost 250 feet into the woods thereafter.
Crews reported that it was nearly impossible to see the tractor-trailer from the highway after the accident. It took fire-fighters almost an hour to cut down the surrounding woods to reach the people in the cab, and by the time they did, it was too late.
The cab where the man and woman were found it was barely recognizable as well, flipped over on its side, and spilling the imported crab legs back into the woods.
After all day clean-up and an investigation, it was concurred that the driver of the tractor-trailer began to drift off the side of the highway, and eventually hit an embankment on the side of the road before the 18-wheeler went racing through the Carolina Pines.
Moreover, there were no reported signs that the man ever applied his brakes at the time of the accident. In fact, it seems as though he simply drifted off the side of the road, and did not even realize that he was doing so. There were no reported drugs or alcohol in either of the victims bodies at the time of the accident. There is still no solidified answer as to what caused this particular accident, yet one can only imagine.
This is sadly a common scenario for truck drivers who have been on the road for hours without the proper amount of sleep.

A tragedy occurred last night when a tractor-trailer collided with a good Samaritan who jumped out of his vehicle to help an overturned SUV near Westinghouse Boulevard.
According to the police reports, the initial accident was between a Mini-van and an SUV that was traveling northbound on I-77 and side-swiped one another, causing the first collision.
Somehow, the SUV ended up in the middle of the interstate in the northbound lanes.
Upon arrival to the scene, a good Samaritan leapt from his vehicle and rushed to the overturned SUV to help the victim lodged in the vehicle.
It was only a few seconds later, and to everyone’s dismay, that a tractor-trailer came zooming by, pushing the SUV several feet across the highway, and killing both men instantly.
The person driving the Mini-van only suffered minor injuries. Sadly, the same can not be said for the man driving the SUV, and the man who graciously risked his life to help the injured.
Interstate 77 had to be shut down for multiple hours while a clean-up crew worked around the clock to have the streets cleaned for all of the morning travelers.
As of this morning, no charges have yet been filed against the tractor-trailer operator. The names of the two victims has yet to be releases.

A tractor-trailer lost its bearings and ran off the road and struck a utility pole last Wednesday night, right outside of Rock Hill on S.C. 5.
The collision resulted in knocking out multiple traffic lights, slowing traffic to a complete halt.Specifically, the intersection at S.C. 5 and Herlong Avenue were affected by the outage.
Rock Hill’s Police and Fire Department rushed to the scene of the accident to mitigate the damage. Crews worked non-stop to restore the power to the traffic lights, and clean up the mess the accident created for other drivers.
According to the police reports, the tractor-trailer driver stated that he made a spilt-decision maneuver when he crashed the truck into the utility pole to avoid hitting another vehicle that had just cut him off. He said he thought he would eb better to damage the truck, then to damage a person.
Thus, the driver of the tractor-trailer will not be listed as the “at-fault” driver.
No one suffered any injury due to the accident and no one had to be taken to the hospital.
It took the police about two hours to get the traffic cleared and redirected. Afterwards, traffic was moving smoothly as though nothing had happened.
All too often over-correcting forces drivers into the path of oncoming vehicles or propels them off the other side of the road. Many times, the over-correcting is a result of losing control of the vehicle due to distractions like texting while driving. Drivers should always remain vigilant about safety and pay attention while driving.
