Lake Norman authorities are encouraging drivers to keep an eye out for deer near the roads and highways since the deer population is on the rise and the chances of hitting deer while driving have increased.
North Carolina Wildlife representatives say this season in particular could be one of the worst yet and they expect crashes to increase between now and December.
The damage facing drivers ranges from having a fatality to a minor bump on the vehicle; however severe the damage may be, there’s reason enough to exercise extra caution. Reps also recommend purchasing deer whistles that produce sounds deer can hear that scare them off the roadway.
Experts caution that rashes are most common between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. They aslo caution that it is better to hit the deer if you cannot avoid it rather than losing control of your car and causing a larger accident.
Each year in North Carolina, there are roughly 17,000 deer related crashes. Since 2007, more than three thousand people were injured and 17 killed in the state. Of the 100 counties in North Carolina, Mecklenburg ranks ninth for deer related crashes. It’s more imporant than ever, therefore, for drivers to be aware of what is happening around them. A major intersection was shut down after a violent crash sent several drivers to the emergency room Tuesday evening.
According to police, at approximately 11 p.m. the driver of one car involved in the crash blew through a red light at the intersection of Pineville-Matthews Road and Johnston Road.
Impact occurred in the middle of the crossroads when a white truck crashed into a silver Infinity, causing the two vehicles to careen off the road some twenty feet.
The force of the moving vehicles caused a utility pole to snap in half.
Firefighters on the scene extracted the man from the Infinity among the live wires from the down power lines, but the accident has left some with serious personal injury.
Motor vehicle travel is the most common means of transportation in the country. So it’s certainly not surprising that motor vehicle crashes were the cause of 90 deaths per day in 2010. In fact, an alarming 32,885 people were killed in the estimated 5,419,000 police reported motor-vehicle crashes that occurred that year. There are precautions you can take, however, to help protect yourself and your family and to also help decrease the number of deaths and injuries on our nation’s highways. Firstly, never drink and drive. It’s always safer to call a cab or a friend. Also, obey posted speed limits. The faster you drive, the more you increase your risk of being involved in a crash. Try to avoid distractions like eating, texting or fiddling with electronic devices. Stay alert and never drive while you are feeling fatigued or drowsy. Lastly, always be sure that you and all of your passengers are wearing a seat belt or are properly restrained before you begin your drive.
Taking the right precautions can make the difference of life or death. However, even the most vigilant of drivers can be involved in a serious accident. A pedestrian was seriously injured just north of uptown Charlotte when a vehicle struck him while crossing a four-lane street Tuesday evening.
The crash occurred at approximately 7:50 p.m. at the intersection of Statesville and Holland avenues.
According to police, the pedestrian crossed two lanes of traffic to the median, but was struck as he attempted to cross the remaining two lanes.
The pedestrian was not using a crosswalk. His injuries, while serious, were not life threatening.
As of now, the driver who struck the pedestrian is not facing any charges.
Studies conducted in 2010 revealed that 4,280 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 70,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the U.S. On average, a pedestrian was killed every 2 hours and injured every eight minutes in traffic collisions. Road safety is a responsibility for all road users, drivers and pedestrians alike. However, pedestrians can take extra precautions to ensure that the inherent vulnerability of walking around motor vehicles can be mitigated as much as possible. If you are a pedestrian traveler, be sure stay visible to drivers by wearing bight and/or reflective clothing and carrying a flashlight. Walk and stand clear of buses, hedges, parked vehicles, and other hazards before crossing. Always walk on the sidewalk or on the road facing traffic if there is no sidewalk. If possible, cross streets at marked crosswalks and intersections and make eye contact with drivers you cross in front of. When crossing, look left, right, and then left again before crossing the street.
Taking the right precautions can make the difference of life or death. However, even the most vigilant of drivers and cautious pedestrians can be involved in a serious accident. A missing persons case came to a tragic end late Tuesday night when an elderly woman was struck and killed along Interstate 85.
The crash occurred around midnight along the southbound land of I-85 near Freedom Drive. Authorities say that the 76-year-old woman, who was in the early stages of dementia, was struck and killed just an hour after being reported missing.
The woman was last seen leaving her home, and told neighbors she was going to get her nails done.
She was later spotted by a driver walking into oncoming traffic before she was struck. According to State Highway Patrol, she was hit by two semi trucks traveling southbound. The drivers told authorities that the woman appeared out of nowhere, and that they attempted to swerve, but there was no time. Authorities say that there was nothing the drivers could have done to avoid the crash.
Troopers believe that the woman was disoriented and did not know where she was. According to the woman’s two sons, she had been to the neurologist just last Tuesday at the hospital.
No charges are being filed against the drivers who hit the woman.

Most pedestrians are hit when attempting to cross the road at places other than intersections. In fact, 63 percent of elderly pedestrian fatalities that occurred in 2010 were at non-intersection locations. With the transportation environment becoming increasingly more complex, and the dominance of vehicles with high speeds and heavy traffic volumes on the main roads, high demands are being placed on pedestrian safety, particularly with regard to the elderly. Yet, people of all populations can be impacted and all pedestrians should protect themselves by staying alert and informed when walking near roads and highways. A few simple tips for pedestrians include walking on the sidewalk. When there is no sidewalk and walking along the road is necessary, walk in the direction facing traffic. When crossing the street, look left, right, and then left again for traffic. Cross marked sidewalks and obey signals. Lastly, make sure drivers can see you by wearing brightly colored clothing.

Last Saturday was grim when a Chester County man was crushed to death while on the job. Isiah McCrorey, age 51, was in charge of operating the cranes for Palmetto Recycling in Rock Hill.
His daughter, Nydia Wherry, is confused by the accident states that her father ” knew those cranes, he’d been working with cranes and working construction for over 20 years,” when the accident occurred; leaving the family baffled and full of questions. Specifically, McCrorey had been working this particular crane at Rock Hill’s Palmetto Recycling for over 2 years.
According to the Rock Hill police report, McCrorey was operating the crane last Saturday when he noticed something was in the way of the crane. He subsequently locked the crane and got out of the equipment in order to move something out-of-the-way. It was at that moment that the one-ton storage container that the crane was holding fell atop McCrorey. Co-workers ran to his rescue and tried to lift the container off of McCrorey as they called 911.
Currently, OSHA is investigating the accident to see if Palmetto Recycling could have done something different to prevent the accident.McCrorey’s daughter Wherry states that her family is not pointing fingers to place blame, however they have obtained counsel to look into the incident.
The victim has left behind his wife of 28 years, along with children and grandchildren to bear the grief.

We have all heard about slip and fall cases, but there is another huge source of premises liability, and that is negligence in security.
When you are a patron of a business, you are entitled not only to assume that the floors are nice and dry providing good traction, but also to assume that your safety will be provided for to a certain extent. This is partially the reason why malls have security guards and the whole reason why clubs have bouncers. Club owners know that they are serving the clubbers alcohol and that folks with alcohol are rowdy. Thus, club owners are required to make some efforts to keep patrons safe.
The usual rule that individuals are never liable for the criminal conduct of others is bent in negligent security cases resulting in personal injury because the law treats business owner’s tort against a business invitee differently than a tort between two unrelated individuals. If the business owner could have reasonably expected that the personal injury would occur or actually knew about the security problem and failed to fix the problem, they will be liable under the negligent security theory for damages caused by personal injury.
