The Charlotte Department of Transportation’s annual report showing crash trends from 2011 reveals the most dangerous intersections in the city.
The report shows that 4 p.m to 5 p.m were peak times for collisions and Fridays had more crashes than any other day of the week.
The ranking of dangerous intersections was based on numbers taken over a period of three years. Over the past two years, the most dangerous intersection was East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Davidson Street in uptown. The number of crashes at the intersection, however, declined over the last year because of the traffic light installed in March 2008. There were 41 wrecks there from 2008-2012.
The second most dangerous intersection was Harrisburg Road and Cambridge Commons Drive. The intersection with the most collisions was Albemarle Road at East W.T. Harris Boulevard, where there were 164 crashes from 2008-2009.
“Contributing circumstances” in the report include inattention, failure to reduce speed, failure to yield the right of way and alcohol.
Out of the near 16,000 crashes in Charlotte last year, 29 were fatal. Approximately 5,800 of those accidents caused injury. Although reports indicate that the overall number of crashes in Charlotte have continued to decrease over the years, it is still just as important to stay ever vigilant when traveling on our nations roads and highways.

Mecklenburg County’s police and fire departments responded to an acid spill at Emerald Chemical plant last Tuesday.
According to the investigative report, there was an improper mixture of chemicals used in conjunction with one another, that caused a chemical cloud; a very deadly combination which caused the accident.
The West Mecklenburg Fire Department was the first organization to arrive on scene at about 9:00p.m. However, after seeing the amount of acid, the West Meck. Fire Department was forced to call the hazmat team at the Charlotte Fire Department. The hazmat team was able to have the acid cleaned up in a little over an hour.
Luckily, there was no one injured during the spill. Although, that is not always the case. Typically, when working with dangerous chemicals, employees must be overly cautious. However, there are times when even the most prudent employee can be injured on the job, through no fault of their own.

Studies by the NHTSA reveal that 10,228 people were killed in alcohol-impaired driving crashes in 2010. The fatalities resulting from these accidents accounted for a startling 31 percent of the total motor vehicle traffic fatalities in the U.S. that year. So it’s not surprising that police across the nation are cracking down on drunk driving. There are countless reasons why no one should drink and drive, and families affected by drunk driving incidents on our nation’s roads could echo this sentiment as strongly as anyone.

That is an investigation currently taking place in Columbia over a shooting and two assaults that took place early Sunday morning. The incidents occurred between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and 2:00 a.m.
According to the police report, the assaults between the victims and assailants was sparked through an argument that escalated to physical contact. The first assault occurred outside of the Thirsty Parrot around 1:00 a.m., where the victim stated that he bumped into the two assailants while walking through the Bar. The victim tried to walk away from the argument, but was subsequently punched in the back of the head by one assailant, and then several times in the face by the other seven assailants. The victim suffered a broken arm.
The second incident, similar to the first, arose at Pop’s New York Pizza; where a verbal argument escalated into yet another physical altercation by the gang. According to a police report, an officer heard several gunshots in the area and then ran to the sound of the gunfire.
The Columbia police department is unsure of the identity of the gang members, but is working diligently to investigate this chain of attacks.

In wrongful death cases, there are potentially two types of benefits. The first is a “survival action” where the decedent lives for even an instant before death. This is where witnesses at the scene or autopsy results are vital. If proven, the decedent’s estate is entitled to medical bills, funeral expenses, and pain and suffering. The second benefit, which does not go through the estate, is for loss of support, services, and companionship, and goes directly to family members.

A car accident took place last Tuesday, around 6:00 p.m. in west Charlotte. The collision injured eight people, two of whom are mere children.
According to CMPD, the accident took place at the intersection of West Boulevard and Old Steele Creek Road. The children were subsequently rushed to the hospital, but luckily, neither of their injuries were considered life threatening.
Unfortunately the same can not be said for one passenger of the vehicle, who currently does have potentially life threatening injuries, according to MEDIC. Of the eight passengers, six were taken to CMC Main, whereas the more seriously injured parties were rushed to Presbyterian Main.
At this moment, all we know is that a “sedan-type” car and the SUV carrying the eight passengers were involved in the accident. However, no details have been released as to fault or cause of the accident.

As children grow, the child safety seats change with them, usually based on weight. Follow the guidelines and make sure your child has the proper seat so that they are protected.
