Mecklenburg Statistics for Car Accidents- Accident Attorney

According to a recent report released by  AAA Carolinas, the deadliest county for the highest number of fatal crashes was Mecklenburg,  with 67 fatal crashes in 2011, up from 46 in 2010.

However, the total number of the total number of traffic fatalities in North Carolina dropped 8 percent  from 1,328 in 2010 to 1,217 last year. This number has been steadily decreasing over the past few years (1,344 in 2009; 1,452 in 2008) and is likely attributed to a number of factors, including:  the fact that there is now more  targeted traffic enforcement on crash-prone roads by local and state law  enforcement officers; there has been  a decline in miles traveled; and more safety features in  new cars, such as traction control have helped with preventing traffic fatalities.

For all vehicles in North Carolina, the total number of crashes in 2011 was  208,545, down from 213,739 in 2010. Although vehicle miles traveled was also  down from 2010, the relative number of crashes dropped from 208.9 crashes per  100 million vehicle miles traveled in 2010 to 205.7 crashes per 100 million  vehicle miles traveled in 2011.

However, these numbers are calculated for the state as a whole, and not simply for the county Charlotte is located in.

Car Accident Causes Traffic Backup- Pineville Accident Attorney

This morning around 6:30 a.m., a hit-and run that resulted in injuries caused horrific traffic for all travellers of Interstate 485, Interstate 77, and caused detours all the way to Concord.

The car accident occurred this morning at the intersection of Pineville- Matthews Road and Rea Road in South Charlotte Motorists were forced to use Interstate 485 as an alternate route. This particular highway is notorious for having some of the worst morning traffic in the greater Mecklenburg area. However, when ever there is a car accident during the morning hours, the highway is particularly slow.

Unfortunately, the victim of the hit-and-run suffered injuries, as did all the drivers on our interstates this morning. Both of our major interstates were “bumper-to-bumper” traffic for hours, as drivers were forced to use alternate routes, that in turn, created worse traffic through the city’s streets.

In the event that there is a car accident, the best course of measure is to just continue on your route and do not slow down or come to a halt to scrutinize the severity of the accident. Distractions are plentiful enough as drivers are trying to make it to work on time in the morning. It is simply adding injury to insult when the drivers serve as ” on-lookers” make matters worse by continuing the distraction through a new medium.

Fiery Bus Accident on I-85 – SC Bus Accident Attorney

Yesterday a Megabus bus caught fire after the bus blew a tire.  All 80 passengers got off the bus safely losing only their stowed belongings.  The bus apparently had blown tire.  The bus driver maneuvered almost outside of the right lane without accident.  Then the bus caught on fire after everyone got off of the bus.  The accident happened just outside of South Carolina on I-85.  The bus was a commercial vehicle owned by Megabus, in Atlanta, taking passengers to Charlotte, N.C.

There is at least as of yet no signs of negligence on the part of Megabus.  As a commercial carrier, Megabus has a responsibility to inspect and maintain their buses.  A spokesperson for Mega bus said the accident bus’s manufacturer was Van Hool, that it was built in 2012, that it had passed a full preventive maintenance check, and that it had been driven 2,500 miles since the last inspection.  “Maintenance checks are performed by megabus.com approximately every 10 days and the maintenance facility recently passed a Department of Transportation routine audit,” she said.

Traffic remained backed up on I-85 northbound for miles.  The principal reason for the delay was the size of the bus.  The double-decker bus was simply too massive to be moved by local wrecking crews without cutting the bus into pieces.

Megabus, owned by the Stagecoach group, is an interstate commercial bus line.  A woman was killed and 12 more were injured in a second Megabus accident last week.  In that crash, also caused by a blown tire, the bus crashed into a bridge.

I-20 SC Tractor-Trailer Accident – Fort Mill Truck Accident Attorney

In a tractor-trailer truck accident last Thursday, the truck went over the rail on Interstate-20 (I-20) into the Augusta Canal.  A Lancaster, South Carolina man was the driver of the truck.  He suffered only minor injuries.

Apparently, this guard rail on the South Carolina line is no stranger to tractor-trailer accidents:  this tractor-trailer truck accident is the third one in three years in which a tractor-trailer truck crashed through the guard rail.

A wrecker driver had worked in two of them.  In the last crash the eighteen-wheeler hung from the bridge rather than falling into the river.

Fatal Car Crash – Speed May Be A Factor – Charlotte Accident Lawyer

Last Friday morning was a fatal one for a North Carolina resident when the victim/driver when she hit a curb and ultimately flipped her car into a church yard.

The car wreck took place around 7:00 a.m., where Kathleen Bland, age 27, was killed when her 2002 Toyota Highlander she was operating hit a curb, went onto a pedestrian sidewalk, then eventually, after flipping multiple times, landed in a church yard. The wreck took place at the intersection of East Sugar Creek Road and North Tryon Street, closing the intersection for over three hours. Sadly, Bland was pronounced dead on scene at 7:21 a.m.

Bland’s car hit three other vehicles when it began to flip across the intersection after hitting a pole.  Three other people suffered minor injuries during the wreck, police said. Two of the drivers were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were shortly after released with non-life threatening injuries. The third driver was treated on scene, and only sustained minor injuries as well.

“It is unknown at this time whether there were any medical conditions that may have been a factor in the crash,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said in a statement. However, speed is believed to have contributed to Bland losing control of her vehicle.

Obesity linked to Increased Car Accident Risk – Lancaster Car Wreck Lawyer

A study conducted by Canadian scientists at the University of Laval and published in the Journal of Transportation Safety & Security claims that morbidly obese drivers may be at increased risk of a crash due to weight-related health complications.  It has been known for while that the obese do not fare as well in car wrecks as smaller individuals simply because cars are not designed for larger bodies.  Airbags and other safety equipment are said to be designed to protect 163 pound men in event of car accidents.  Studies had shown that male obese individuals were more likely to suffer facial, spinal, head and upper chest injuries in a collision than those with BMIs below 30.

This new study however focuses on the increased likelihood of accidents in the obese population getting into car wrecks in the first place.  The study showed “that 800,000 drivers in the America with obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea were involved in illness-related car accidents in the year 2000, which supported their claims that obesity-related ailments also contribute to road hazards.”  These ailments affecting chiefly the obese increase rates of accidents and make car accidents more serious.
